Liam Payne has opened up about his secret struggles at the height of One Direction’s success.
The singer, who became a father this year to son Bear, revealed he often was forced to put on a front when performing, but deep down he was battling demons.
“I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it,” he shared.
“Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on.”
At the time it was reported that he had a meltdown backstage after suffering panic attack-like symptoms just ahead of the gig.
He had also just split from ex-girlfriend Sophia Smith.
“I let it get to me that day. I wasn’t in a good place. And unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much,” he added to The Sun.
Looking back, Liam added that he doesn’t think the band took enough time to celebrate their success because they were always so busy, and that’s eventually what “got on top of us in the end”.
He recalls winning three EMAs but not being able to enjoy it because they had to jump straight on a plane to the next place.
The 24-year-old admitted the group needed to take a break from each other in order to remember why they enjoyed it so much in the first place.
